Antalya pivotal to bullish tourism targets, as medical tourism also shows healthy rise

Air traffic through Antalya and increasingly Gazipasa near Alanya will help tourism in Turkey to grow and enable it to generate a record level of revenue from tourism in 2013, the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan announced this month.

In eleven years, the annual number of tourists in Turkey climbed from 13 million to 36 million, confirme Erdogan. In 2012, the country attracted a total of 31.8 million foreign visitors. The target for tourist revenue in 2013 is $30billion, compared with $23.4billion in 2012.  A knock-on effect of increased tourism is greater interest in property in Turkey.

In a speech, Erdogan said that the newly-laid Gazipasa Airport would serve at least 1.5 million tourists after the completion of the new track and terminal building, adding that the Turkish government had invested 13 billion liras in Antalya during the last 11 years.

“We simply rebuilt Antalya with new schools, universities, dormitories, sports complexes, roads and houses. We will keep on with further projects to promote Antalya as a world brand,” said Erdogan.

Turkey is the 6th most popular tourist destination according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) Tourism Highlights 2012 Edition. The country attracted a total of 31.8 million foreign visitors in 2012, achieving a total revenue of USD 23.4 billion.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s Minister of Health has said the country’s rise in health tourism will double the revenue the country makes from treating foreign patients in 2014. “Russians and citizens of the Turkic republics top the list of foreign patients who prefer Turkey,” said Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu. “We aim to double this year’s $2.5billion medical tourism income in 2014. Beginning in 2014, two successive 5-year plans will be put into action to further improve Turkey’s status as a regional healthcare hub that can serve the surrounding region of about a billion people.”
