Sky’s the limit for Turkish Airlines in 2014: passengers number up by a quarter

Posted on Feb 14 2014 by spotblue

A sign of the growing popularity of Turkey and its ambitions to become a major player around the globe, Turkish Airlines has reported an impressive 24.3 per cent rise in the number of passengers carried during January 2014 compared to the same period last year.

Turkey’s national carrier served four million passengers in the first month of the year, up from 3.2 million last year. Looking closer at the numbers, domestic passenger numbers rose by 31 per cent and international  passengers by 19.7 per cent, while International Business/Comfort Class passengers increased by 18.7 per cent and international-to-international transfer passengers increased by 26.9 per cent.

Also, the number of Turkish Airlines landings increased from 25,961 for the period of January 2013 to 31,875 in 2014, representing a 22.8 per cent hike. January also saw the number of destinations covered by the airline increase by 12 per cent, reaching to 243 from 218 last January.
The increasing frequency and range of destinations offered by Turkish Airlines should help encourage investment in the country and be reassuring for owner of property in Turkey and Istanbul.

Meanwhile, in order to meet its growing passenger numbers Turkish Airlines has upgraded its passenger lounge in Istanbul, adding another 2,400 square metres to its existing 3,500 square metres, an increase in floor-space of more than 40 per cent. Located in the departure area of Ataturk Airport, Istanbul, the expanded lounge adds a second floor to the existing space and connects them with a spiral staircase that integrates a global sphere, representing the worldwide reach of Turkish Airlines.

The new addition creates additional space and increases the capacity of the lounge to over 1000 guests. The existing facility, which included a children’s playground, library, billiards area, prayer room and teleconference section, has seen an expansion of the rest and shower space as well as additional massage beds.
