Turkey on the ball when its comes to developing sports venues

Posted on Aug 14 2013 by spotblue

Sports facilities in Turkey are set to get more extensive, as the government there embarks on its largest ever investment in sports venues, which includes the construction of 20 stadiums and an indoor hall with a 20,000-person capacity.

The programme is a joint initiative between Turkey’s Ministry of Sport and its Housing Development Administration (TOKİ), which has already completed two stadiums, namely Türk Telekom Arena, currently used by Turkish football team Galatasaray, and Mersin Stadium, which was used during the Mediterranean Games held in the southern province of Mersin.

Tenders for 11 other stadiums have been conducted and construction has begun, while seven further stadiums are at the tender stage. The 3-billion Turkish lira ($1.55 billion) investment programme also includes 1,000 sports halls and 431 stadia for education institutions.

TOKİ would be the contractor for Olympic facilities, including an Olympic village, if Istanbul, one of three bidders along with Tokyo and Madrid, wins the race to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. The winning city will be selected at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires in September. In a report released in June, the International Olympic Committee report stated its confidence in TOKİ as builder of Olympic venues.

In June this year Turkey hosted the Under-20 (U20) Football World Cup which saw the England team based in the southern Mediterranean city of Antalya and playing its group stage games there in the impressive Akdeniz University Stadium. Turkey’s status on the international sports stage is growing, including its reputation as a world-class golfing destination.
