Turkish Airports Continue Strong Growth in 2011

Turkish airports continued their exceptional growth last year according to the latest data from the government as published by airline data collation website Anna.Aero.

According to the data 117 million people landed at Turkish airports in 2011, a growth of 14% compared to 2010, and a growth of 47 million over the last 4 years. During the last 4 years the average growth rate has been 13.75% per year, with 12% in 2008, 9% in 2009, 20% in 2010 and now 14% in 2011.

Istanbul Atatürk Airport saw the biggest growth last year fastest growing in Turkey, with 37.5 million passengers flying into the airport last year, a growth of 16.5% compared to 2010. Meanwhile Istanbul Sabiha Gocken, which has been the fastest growing in many Anna.Aero reports saw passenger numbers grow by 14% last year. In fact, according to the government data Sabiha Gocken saw only the third biggest growth last year, Antalya took second with a growth of 14.1%.

Izmir took over Ankara as the fourth busiest airport, and Dalaman was the only airport to see a fall in traffic, which was down by 1.5%.

Anna.Aero also revealed some new Turkish flights for 2012 as follows:

  • Istanbul (IST): Air France to Nice (April) and Toulouse (April), Atlasjet to London Stansted (April), to Manchester (March), Lufthansa to Berlin (June), Turkish Airlines to Novosibirsk (March).
  • Antalya (AYT): airberlin to Friedrichshafen (May), Monarch to London Gatwick (May), Norwegian to Oslo Torp (March), SAS to Oslo (May).
  • Istanbul (SAW): Air One to Venice (June), to Eindhoven (February).
  • Izmir (ADB): Lufthansa to Berlin (June).
  • Ankara (ESB): Lufthansa to Frankfurt (March).
  • Dalaman (DLM): easyJet to Edinburgh (April), Monarch to London Gatwick (April) and Manchester (May).
  • Bodrum (BJV): to Newcastle (June), to Paris Orly (April).
