Turkish Power Line Producer to Open $100 Million Plant in US

Posted on Oct 12 2012 by spotblue

Turkish power line tower producer, Mitaş, is to open a plant in Kaufmann County, Texas at an estimated cost of $100 million. The factory will eventually provide employment for 300 people when it is completed in four years’ time.

The company is Turkey’s largest producer of power line towers and has chosen to open this plant in America in order to get a foothold in the region. There will be two phases of construction, with the first $50 million phase giving employment to 150 people by 2014.

The company anticipates little difficulty in getting business in the US as apparently 20% of exports are already to Canada and the US. In addition the company exports towers to Colombia, Peru and Guatemala.

The second phase of the plant should begin production in 2016, employing an additional 150 people. The two plants will have a combined production of around 30,000 tons of steel towers annually. Mitaş also has plans to export the towers to 134 countries. In 2011 Turkish exports to the US were worth $5.2 billion as trade relations between the two countries are expanding. Last year bilateral trade between America and Turkey increased by 34% to reach record levels of nearly $20 billion.

In addition to increasing commercial links, the two governments are also beginning to foster closer relations. The Texas Senator Bob Deuell and Congressmen Jeb Hensarling recently met with the Consul general of Turkey Cemalettin Aydin in Houston for the ground breaking ceremony of the plant in Kaufmann County.
